By taking part in rallies and protests, Americans can exercise their right to be heard.

The United States of America is known as a great melting pot and the "land of opportunity." As a nation full of people from every background, race and ethnicity in the world, we have developed a rich, multi-faceted culture that is uniquely American. However, this uniquely American culture also includes inequality, injustice, racism and unfair treatment of minorities, particularly African-Americans. While there have been great strides in the fight for equality, there is still a long way to go to ensure that America is a land where there is "freedom and justice for all."

Instructions

  1. Social Justice

    • 1

Join various civil rights and social organizations, such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), that work to promote equality and justice, not only for African-Americans, but for all people. It is important to note that injustice can manifest itself in many ways, primarily through social, economic and educational inequality. Try to join and support grass roots groups and other nonprofit organizations that work to change bias and unjust laws and which advocate for justice for children, minorities, the poor and the disabled.

    • 2

Volunteer in low-income neighborhoods. Starting a community garden, cleaning up and rebuilding playgrounds and tutoring students are all ways to invest in a community. By getting involved in low-income areas, which are often disproportionally African-American, people are more inclined to support initiatives, policies and political candidates that are specifically dedicated to closing the socio-economic gaps that perpetuate inequality.

    • 3

Participate in rallies, marches, protests and petitions that promote equality and justice for all people. Remember that Martin Luther King, Jr. said that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

    • 4

Start with the man in the mirror. Every change you wish to see in the world begins with the individual. Make social justice and equality a part of your daily life by treating people the way you want to be treated. Judge people based on their character and actions, not on preconceived ideas or stereotypes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember, the promotion of equality and justice for all people is a long-term, if not lifetime, commitment. While there may be progress and improvement, it is naive to think that racism, sexism, religious persecution, homophobia and other social issues have been resolved or do not exist.
