How to Talk to People on Twitter

Unlike other social networking services, Twitter does not support direct instant-message communication between users. Nevertheless, it's designed around a certain type of communication. In addition to "tweeting" your own short strings of text, you can "retweet" another user's Tweet, reply to a specific Tweet with one of your own or mention another user or set of users in an original Tweet, associating it with them and calling their attention to it.

Instructions

    • 1

Reply to someone else's Tweet by hovering your mouse over it and clicking the "Reply" button that appears. A box will pop up where you can enter a new Tweet in reply to the one you're viewing. The new Tweet will begin with "@username," where "username" is the name of the person to whom you're replying.

    • 2

Retweet someone else's Tweet by hovering your mouse over it and clicking the "Retweet" link. Your own Twitter account will immediately publish a copy of the Tweet, alerting all your followers as well as the original publisher of the Tweet.

    • 3

Mention another Twitter user in a Tweet of your own by including "@username," where "username" is her Twitter name. These Tweets will appear in the "Mentions" section of the user's main Twitter page, ensuring that she sees them even if she's not following you. You can mention as many users in a Tweet as will fit without overrunning Twitter's length limitations.
