How Do I Install a Brush in Photoshop?

With the myriad of options, shapes, patterns and sizes available, Photoshop brushes are sophisticated add-ons that bring a high level of creativity and productivity to your workspace. Anyone who uses Photoshop will use a brush at some time, and they are typically among the most used tools in the program. Just like a regular paint brush, Photoshop brushes allow you to apply texture, paint with color or shadow or create delicate features and hard edges. Although a number of brushes do ship with the Photoshop program, you can download hundreds of custom-created brushes from the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the .ABR file which you've downloaded or wish to install into Photoshop. The .ABR file extension is what Photoshop uses for its brush plug-in.

    • 2

Place the .ABR file you have downloaded into this file path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\PhotoshopCS5\Presets\Brushes.

    • 3

Launch Photoshop. Load your brush palette if it's not already open in your workspace, by selecting "Window," then scroll down to "Brushes." Click on the small drill-down arrow on the right corner of the brushes palette to open the brush picker. Select "Load Brushes," and click on the .ABR file you downloaded and placed in the brushes' file path.
