How to Get High Speed Internet Service Through Telephone Lines

You can use phone lines to connect to the Internet.

Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL, refers to technology used by telephone companies to provide high-speed data services, or Internet. Existing telephone lines are used by telephone companies to deliver this type of service along with the regular telephone service. Both types of service (telephone and DSL) are brought to your home by the telephone company via two telephone wires that run from the utility pole to the network interface device, or NID mounted just outside your home. Connecting your household telephone wiring to the NID, and distributing the wires to the modem and telephone will give you phone signals and Internet connectivity.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your telephone service provider and subscribe to DSL service. Decide whether you will purchase the necessary hardware (modem, DSL filter and patch cords) from a commercial distributor, or order them from the telephone company. Some DSL providers will include the necessary hardware with their DSL service package while others will allow you to purchase them from outside suppliers.

Plug a 2-way phone jack splitter into a wall telephone jack. Plug the DSL phone filter into one of the jacks on the 2-way jack splitter. The DSL phone filter serves to remove interference that may be caused by DSL signals. Plug the patch cord coming from your land-line telephone into the jack at the end of the DSL filter. Lift the telephone handset, and check for a dial tone.

Set the modem close to the 2-way jack splitter. Plug one end of the telephone patch cord supplied with the modem into the available jack on the 2-way jack splitter. Plug the other end of the patch cord into the telephone jack at the back of the modem. Plug the network cable from your router, or from your computer into the network jack (WAN) at the back of the modem. Turn on power to your modem, and to your computer. Browse the Internet to test the DSL connection.
