How to Tie an Egg Loop Knot

An egg-loop knot is commonly tied for catching steelhead salmon. The knot is ideal when using roe or drifting off the bottom of a river. Remember to tie slowly until you are familiar with the method. Different fishing knots are meant to create various tensions keyed to the fish you are angling. Knots are also designed for ease because many need to be tied in unsteady situations such as in boats or rivers.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a hook in your right hand and thread the line with your left hand through the hook's eye. Slide the line about 1/2 inch past the hook.

    • 2

Hold the line to the hook with your right hand thumb and index finger. Wrap the line around the eye with your left hand six times.

    • 3

Hold the line in place with the middle finger of your right hand.

    • 4

Put the other end of the leader through the eye for about an inch. There will now be a loop under the hook.

    • 5

Turn the loop clockwise for half a turn.

    • 6

Hold the top of the loop to the hook.

    • 7

Wrap the part of the loop that is closest to the eye around the neck of the hook six times.

    • 8

Hold the loop to the hook while pulling the 1 inch of line that is poking out of the eye. This will pull the loop until it is eliminated and you will have a long piece of line coming from the eye. Pull it snug.

    • 9

Cut off the end closest to the curve of the hook.
