Sexing rabbits allows you to determine bucks from does.

Rabbits come in a wide range of sizes and colors depending on the breed, and they make charming pets that can be well-socialized for humans. Sexing is the process of determining whether a rabbit is a male or a female. Sexing is essential if you want to breed rabbits or if you want to ensure that you have either a male or a female rabbit as pet. Rabbits start reproducing at the age of 3 months, and it is important to separate the males from the females to prevent accidental litters.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the rabbit and hold it on its back on your lap. For most rabbits, hold the hind legs away from your body. If the rabbit is particularly large, hold it with its legs toward you. Most rabbits go into a trance when this happens and lay still for a few moments, allowing you to examine their genitalia.

    • 2

Locate the vent between the rabbit's hind legs. The vent is the horizontal slit between the rabbit's hind legs, and it hides both the genitals and the anus.

    • 3

Apply gentle pressure to either side of the vent with your fingers and carefully move your fingers apart, causing the vent to open. When the vent opens, you will see an opening and a small protrusion. The opening, which is closest to the tail, is the anus.

    • 4

Look at the small protrusion. In male rabbits, the protrusion is a round, tubular structure with a spherical tip. Male rabbits older than 10 weeks have two small testicles underneath the skin. The protrusion on the female is oval instead of round and it has a slit through the opening.
