How to Insulate a Lunch Bag
An insulated lunch bag can help keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Insulated bags help maintain food temperature and reduce the chance of spoilage. A well-insulated lunch bag can help preserve your lunch for hours. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, harmful bacteria will grow rapidly in temperatures between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Store perishable foods in an insulated lunch bag to help maintain a safe temperature. You can insulate a lunch bag to preserve hot and cold foods with a few inexpensive materials.
Things You'll Need
- Polystyrene foam
- Insulating fabric
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Glue
- Needle and thread

Cut a piece of polystyrene craft foam to fit the bottom of the lunch bag. Cut a piece of insulating fabric to cover one side of the craft foam. Glue the insulating fabric to one side of the foam. Place the foam bottom fabric-side up in the lunch bag after the glue dries.

Cut five pieces of insulating fabric the same length and width as the outside dimensions of the lunch bag. Cut one piece for each of the four sides of the bag and one piece for the bottom of the bag. Sew the pieces together to form a bag that opens at the top.

Insert the fabric bag into the lunch bag. Use a needle and thread (or glue) to secure the insulating fabric bag to the inside of the lunch bag by stitching (or gluing) the bags together at the top. Cut one piece of insulating fabric to fit the inside of the top of the bag. Glue or sew the insulating fabric to the inside of the lunch bag top.

Tips & Warnings
The polystyrene bottom is optional but adds stability to the lunch bag and an extra layer of insulating protection for foods.
Prechill your lunch bag in the refrigerator or freezer to help keep cold foods cold.
Use frozen ice packs or a hot water bottle inside your lunch bag to help maintain food temperature.
Never eat food that has been left out without refrigeration or food that has been at room temperature for 30 minutes or more.
