How to Create a Point of Sale

A point of sale is the place where your customers meet you to buy what they want from your retail business after shopping. The point of sale requires more than simply putting a cash register in the store -- you should set it up to make it both attractive to the customer and functional for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your point of sale area in close proximity to the door. This way, when customers come into the store, you can route them past the register first. You or your employee can see and greet each person who comes into the establishment, then ring them up right before they leave the door again.

    • 2

Purchase a point of sale (POS) system, which is basically a computer system that can connect to various devices that you need to process sales. Connect a cash register to your POS system so that you can accept cash sales.

    • 3

Secure a credit card merchant account and accompanying terminal to process credit cards if you choose to accept credit cards. Link your credit card terminal to your POS system if possible. In some cases, merchants process credit cards separately and simply punch in the sale amount.

    • 4

Connect a barcode scanner device and accompanying software to your POS system if needed. For a very small store this is not usually a requirement due to the expense -- you can keep track of sales on a computer spreadsheet or written journal instead.

    • 5

Set up point of sale product displays strategically near your register to inspire last-minute buys. For instance, at clothing stores merchants commonly place jewelry, perfume, socks and other accessories. At food stores, merchants place candy, gum and small compact foodstuff near the register area.

    • 6

Place advertisements on the counter near your POS displays for your latest sales and deals in the store. The customer may not have seen previous advertisements about your specials and might decide to do some more shopping after noticing information about your special deals while waiting in line.
