How to Prepare a Simple Will for Free
Creating a simple will frees your heirs from having to make difficult decisions after your death. It can quell arguments concerning how your property is dispersed. A simple will does not have to cost anything. It can be kept in a safe place in your home or given to a trusted family member or friend.

1
Gather information about the property you will leave behind and create a list that documents all of your valuable and sentimental belongings. Make sure to include where individual items are located.
-
2
Document your name, the date that you are writing the simple will and state that you are of sound mind. Sign your name next to the statement so that people know the will was written by you.

3
Make a list of your material goods and document where you want each item to go. If you plan to leave money or items to a specific company or charity, include the name of that organization and the contact information in the will. If you have minor children, designate a guardian and be specific about what items you are leaving to the children.
-
4
Write down the information about any bank accounts, investments and money. State who should receive the money. If the money is to go to a charity, designate a relative or friend to oversee the transfer.
-
5
Confirm funeral arrangements. Make sure your heirs know what funeral home you have chosen, where you would like to be buried or if you want to be cremated. Inform people if you have prepaid for your funeral.
-
6
Sign the simple will with your name and write your name in cursive beside it. Have a friend or family member sign the will as a witness. A notary public also can witness and sign the document.
