How Do I Make a PC Work Faster?
Over time, your computer starts to slow down. Programs open and respond sluggishly. Opening files takes much longer. Fragmented files, excess programs and old hardware are just a few of the causes of a slow PC. A few tweaks and upgrades can help make your PC work faster. In many cases, your computer can perform as well, if not better, than it did when you first bought it. Many methods of speeding up a PC are completely free.

Run a full scan with the anti-virus software of your choice. Viruses can severely reduce the speed of programs and your operating system. Follow the prompts from your anti-virus software to remove any viruses and spyware.

2
Download and run CCleaner from Piriform.com. This removes temporary Internet files, cookies, browsing history, temporary application files and even errors in the registry in a single step. Excess temporary files, browsing history and registry errors slow down even the fastest computers. You can also edit startup programs. Alternatively, go to "Start," select "All Programs," choose "Accessories," select "System Tools" and choose "Disk Cleanup." Choose the types of files to delete and press "OK." This does not edit the registry or delete temporary files from all programs.

3
Go to "Start," select "All Programs," choose "Accessories," press "System Tools" and select "Disk Defragmenter." Select your main hard drive (C: for most users) and press "Defragment Disk." Wait for the process to complete. This compacts files and removes fragments so the hard drive functions faster.

4
Back up all files and restore your system to factory settings. Use the restore discs provided with your system, a system backup or discs you've created yourself to format and restore your system. Follow the prompts provided in the restore process to complete the restore.
-
5
Go to "Start," select "Control Panel" and choose "Windows Update." Press "Install Updates" to get the latest updates for Windows. Updates fix many bugs or security issues that may slow down your computer.
-
6
Go to "Start," select "Control Panel" and choose "Programs and Features." Select any programs you no longer use or need and press "Uninstall."
-
7
Delete or back up any files you no longer need on your computer. The cleaner your hard drive, the faster your computer will run.
-
8
Upgrade your memory or RAM. Check with the computer or motherboard manufacturer for the maximum amount of memory your computer can use or recognize. Check your current memory by going to "Start" and right-clicking "Computer." Select "Properties." The memory is listed under "System."
Memory can be purchased at most electronics or computer retailers.

Tips & Warnings
When possible, double your memory or install the max amount. This prevents the need for another memory upgrade in the near future.
Do not format or restore your system unless absolutely necessary. When formatting, you run the risk of losing personal files if they are not backed up first.
