How to Obtain a Police Report in Newark, NJ

If you have been in an automobile accident or are the victim of a property crime, you may be required to file proof of the incident with your insurance company. Typically, proving that an automobile accident or property crime took place can be achieved by submitting a copy of the police report investigating the incident. If your automobile accident or property crime took place in Newark, New Jersey, you can request a copy of your police report by filing a records request with City Hall.

Download and print the police records request form from the City of Newark website. To obtain a Newark police report, you must fill out and file a request under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act. The form is provided in PDF format for easy downloading and printing.

Fill out the records request form. In the requester information box, provide your name, mailing address, email and phone number. Indicate a method of delivery for your records and sign and date the form. In the payment information box, indicate a method of payment and a maximum authorized cost. In the record request information box, provide information about the incident for which you wish to obtain a police report for, including the type of report, date of incident, location and names of individuals involved.

File the records request form with the Office of the City Clerk. The Newark Office of the City Clerk is located at City Hall. At the time of this publication, the fee for obtaining a police record is 75 cents per page for the first ten pages, 50 cents per page for the next 10 pages and 25 cents per page for any additional pages. If your record request costs more than $5, you may be required to provide a 50 percent deposit. Your record request will be processed within seven business days.
