Google Docs makes it easy to edit your files on the go.

Google Docs offers more than just online storage space for your files. It also gives you the capability to edit your files right in your browser. This comes in handy if you are accessing your files remotely. Saving a new spreadsheet within Google Docs is no different than saving a spreadsheet in a desktop application --- you just need to know which button to click. You can also save your Google Doc so that it can be moved to a hard drive.

Instructions

  1. The Basics of Saving

    • 1

Click the "Create New" button in the upper left corner of the Google Docs screen, just below the "Google Docs" logo. This will open a drop-down menu of your document format choices. Select "Spreadsheet." A blank spreadsheet will open in a new tab.

    • 2

Enter your data into the spreadsheet as needed. If you need help in finding formulas or other commands that correspond to another spreadsheet application, open the "Help" menu. The Formula Builder and Google Docs Help Center will point you in the right direction.

    • 3

Open the "File" menu within Google Docs (not the File menu on your browser). Select "Save." Type the name of the spreadsheet into the pop-up window and click "OK." Alternatively, you can click the "Save Now" button in the top right corner. This will also prompt you to name your spreadsheet. Once your spreadsheet has been saved, it can be accessed later through the document listing on the main Google Docs screen.

    • 5

Click the "More Actions" button on the blue bar near the top of the site.

    • 6

Select the second option from the top, "Save as Excel." You can now download the file.
