Preheat oven to the temperature indicated on your boxed cake mix. Mix your cake mix with oil and eggs according to the directions. Blend well. Pour into a well-greased, 9- by 13-inch cake pan and bake for the recommended time. Stick a tooth pick in your cake. If the toothpick comes out clean, your cake is fully baked. Allow to cool.

Spread icing generously on the cooled cake. Smooth with a baking spatula.

    • 3

Grasp decorating icing tube, squeeze the end and write your message on the birthday cake across the center of the cake. Many parents write "Happy Birthday," their child's name, and sometimes even the child's age. Decorative icing is typically a bright color to contrast against the chocolate or vanilla icing you used to cover the cake. Be sure to leave room for a cake topper if you plan to use one.

Drop sprinkles all over the cake. You can make it as colorful or creative as you'd like. Sprinkle options include chocolate, various solid colors, rainbow -- the varieties are vast.

Attach the cake topper carefully. Often, an appropriate or fun cake topper can be your child's favorite character or animal. Since you've written a birthday message in the center of the cake, the cake topper can easily be placed in one of the upper corners. Cake toppers can be purchased at party stores, big box stores, craft shops and sometimes even supermarkets.

Insert birthday candles into the cake. If you are using single candles, they can be placed sporadically across the cake. If you decide to use just one decorative candle, such as an age candle, you can be place in an upper corner, opposite from the cake topper.
