How To Test Inernet Speed

Internet service providers may not offer as much Internet speed as you would hope.

Although your Internet service provider may promise you Web speeds of a certain level, don't take your provider's word for it. There are a number of Internet speed tests that will check your upload and download speed. These numbers will vary depending on the time of day when you access the Web and if you have other windows open on your computer. For best results, access a few different Internet speed test sites.

Instructions

1. Open your Web browser and visit a Web speed testing site (see Resources).

2. Click the button on the page that says "Begin," "Start Speed Test," or "Start."

3. Wait a few moments as the site sends and extracts information to your computer to test your upload and download speeds. The test results will appear on your page when the test completes.

4. Write down the upload and download speeds, so you can compare the scores to future tests.
