How to Convert Miles Per Hour to Knots
The term "knots" that denotes nautical speed originated from a naval method of tying knots in a rope to which wood chips were fastened. As the ship moved forward, the rope was pulled backwards in the water as the knots that went overboard were counted within a 30 second time frame. If you are more familiar with the common speed measurement of miles per hour, you can easily convert between this measurement and knots by applying a simple formula.

1
Write down your speed in miles per hour.
-
2
Divide the speed by 1.15077945; this is the number of miles per hour equal to a knot.

3
State your answer in knots and round the figure if necessary. For example, if you had a speed of 30 miles per hour, you would multiply 30 times 1.15077945 to get 34.5233835 knots. You can round this figure to 34.5 knots.
