How to Create a Temporary .edu Address

An ".edu" domain name is a suffix that represents a domain name for a U.S. academic institution. EDUCAUSE is the official registrar for ".edu" domain names. Only post-secondary academic institutions that are institutionally accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education are eligible to register an ".edu" domain name. You must register the domain name for a minimum of one year, and then you can cancel the subscription.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the ".edu Eligibility" page at the EDUCAUSE website.

    • 2

Check the EDUCAUSE website to see if your desired domain name is available. Go to the section entitled "For Institutions Within the United States," and type your desired domain name in the text field. Click the "Check Domain" button.

    • 3

Request your domain name for one year. Click the "Request This Domain" button. Then check your institution's eligibility for the ".edu" suffix. If your institution is based in the United States, select an option from "Search by accreditation agency" and click on the "Search" button. If your institution is in the list, with a link associated with it, click on the link --- if it is not in the list, you cannot register the domain name. Fill out a registration form, including all of your relevant contact details and billing information. If your application is successful, EDUCAUSE will contact you with the details of your domain name.
