How to Protect a Wedding Cake at an Outside Reception thumbnail
Outdoor wedding receptions should not limit your decision for a wedding cake.

If your wedding reception is being held outdoors, you`ll need to protect your wedding cake from the elements. Sun can melt the icing and cause it to tilt if the cake has multiple tiers. The wind can blow away toppers and decorative flowers and it's never appetizing to have bugs flying around your cake. There are discreet ways to protect your cake with decorative items that will allow it to remain a star attraction. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cake under a decorative food tent. If possible, have the tent match the theme of the wedding. Position a decorative umbrella over the cake to protect it from the sun and potential rain.

    • 2

Place decorative reed diffusers in pretty vases filled with scented citronella oil or geraniol to keep bugs away. Spread the insect-repelling diffusers around the cake table as a functional decoration.

    • 3

Place a small dollop of icing under cake toppers and flowers used around the cake to keep the wind from blowing them away. Stick the flowers and decorations into the icing as if it were glue. Use a small enough amount of icing so that it can be covered with the decoration.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the wedding will go into the night, position a spot light under the umbrella covering the cake to have it double as a decoration with the light when the sun goes down.

  • If the flowers in the centerpiece are artificial, discreetly add scented citronella oil or geraniol and a few reed diffuser sticks to the vases instead of separate bug diffusers.

  • Geraniol is a bug repellent made from geraniums that has been found to be more effective than citronella and has a more discreet smell. When used with diffusers it works to repel 80 percent of bugs in a 10 foot radius.
