How Do I Hook Up an External Modem?
Although most modern computers have built-in modems or wireless capabilities, you may need to hook up an external modem to use DSL or cable Internet services. After you arrange for service through a dial-up, phone or cable company, you can use the proper modem (often supplied by the company) to connect your computer to the Internet.
Things You'll Need
- Phone line or cable line
- Power supply cord
- Ethernet cable
- Modem user manual
- Modem installation CD

1
Turn off your computer. If using a desktop computer, turn the CPU around for easy access to the rear ports.
-
2
Connect the modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable. The port on the modem should be clearly marked with a picture of a computer or the word "Output." Connect the other end of the cable to an available Ethernet port on the back of the CPU.

3
Connect your modem to the phone line or cable line that was set up by your Internet service provider. If using dial-up, connect to any available phone jack using a standard phone cord.

4
Plug in your modem's power supply cable. Attach it to the modem before plugging it into the wall. Watch for the lights on the front of the modem to turn on. If they do not, look for an "On" switch for the modem.

Wait at least two minutes for the modem to power up successfully. Once it does, turn on your computer and insert the modem's installation CD into your CD drive, if prompted. Some computers will automatically detect and install new hardware; if this is the case with your computer, no installation CD will be required.
