How to Mute Skype

How to Mute Skype thumbnail
Use Skype's mute button rather than taking off your headset.

Skype has grown into a full-blown communications tool, but it originally rose to fame as a voice-over-Internet phone provider. All you need to make a call is a headset, an Internet connection and the Skype software. However, even when you need to talk to somebody, you may not want him to hear everything you say. Skype offers a mute function for those times.

Instructions

    • 1

Call somebody using the Skype software.

    • 2

Look for the options toolbar underneath the main call interface. Locate the "Mute" button, which looks like a microphone with a line slashed diagonally across it.

    • 3

Push the "Mute" button to mute Skype. The icon turns red in versions 5.0 and above to show that your headset is muted.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click on the "Mute" icon a second time to resume your conversation.

  • Adjust the sound settings for the call using the volume controls on the same toolbar as the "Mute" button.
