How to Mute Skype

Use Skype's mute button rather than taking off your headset.

Skype has grown into a full-blown communications tool, but it originally rose to fame as a voice-over-Internet phone provider. All you need to make a call is a headset, an Internet connection and the Skype software. However, even when you need to talk to somebody, you may not want him to hear everything you say. Skype offers a mute function for those times.

Instructions

1. Call somebody using the Skype software.

2. Look for the options toolbar underneath the main call interface. Locate the "Mute" button, which looks like a microphone with a line slashed diagonally across it.

3. Push the "Mute" button to mute Skype. The icon turns red in versions 5.0 and above to show that your headset is muted.

Tips & Warnings

• Click on the "Mute" icon a second time to resume your conversation.

• Adjust the sound settings for the call using the volume controls on the same toolbar as the "Mute" button.
