How to Use a Finish Nailer

Pneumatic nailing machines allow the nailing process to go substantially quicker than using a hammer and loose nails. This machine lets you nail much more wood in the same amount of time, getting the job done quicker in the process. If you're installing crown molding or a base molding in a room, a finish nailer is the way to go. This will install finishing nails into the molding, leaving a very minimal hole in the wood that's easy to cover up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the hearing protection and the eye protection. Hold the nailer with your left hand so that the handle is perpendicular to the ground. Locate the follower on the nail guard, which is directly underneath the handle. Pull the follower back toward the air compressor inlet on the nailer until it clicks into place.

    • 2

Install a strip of finishing nails into the hole on the nail guard with the pointed ends of the nails pointing down. Push down the release lever on the left side of the nail guard with your hand to lock the follower to the nail guard.

    • 3

Locate the air exhaust deflector, which is on the front of the nailer. Twist the outlet port of the deflector so that it won't blow in your face when you're using the gun.

    • 4

Plug in the air hose from the air compressor into the port on the backside of the finish nailer. Hold the device in your right hand. Push the tip of the nailer on the surface you want to secure, which turns off the safety on the nailer. Pull the trigger with your index finger with a short, quick pull to release a single nail into the molding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always treat the finish nailer the same way you would a gun. Always consider it a loaded weapon, and never assume that the safety on the nailer will work properly. Never point it at an object that you don't want to put a nail into.
