How to Design a Portfolio for Architecture
It is important to make and maintain an up-to-date portfolio of your work as an architect. As the main source for presenting your work and talents, it is important that this portfolio shows a wide range of abilities in a concise and easily understandable format. Portfolios are most often constructed on a computer using programs such as Photoshop. This enables images to be set up on sheets and easily manipulated. These sheets can then be printed or displayed online to demonstrate your skills to potential employees.

Choose the size and orientation of the portfolio sheets. This is usually either ANSI B size, which is 11 inches by 17 inches, or ANSI D size, which is 22 inches by 34 inches. The choice of size is a matter of preference. Greater detail and image quality are possible with larger portfolios, while smaller portfolios are easier to transport and quicker to show to a potential employer. Make your portfolio easy to review by ensuring that all sheets are the same size and orientation.

Set up a basic template sheet using Photoshop. This can be done by clicking ''File,'' then ''New,'' then selecting the preset ''U.S. Paper'' and entering the appropriate sizes, then clicking ''OK.'' A clean, simple and subtle graphic or logo can be added to the template to provide basic information about the individual or company on all sheets of the portfolio. This could be information such as the name of the practice, contact details and the title of an individual project. The addition of a border can also be an effective tool to frame your work.

Insert selected images of work that your want within your portfolio. This can be done by locating the file on your computer and right clicking, then selecting ''Open with Photoshop.'' Click ''Select,'' then ''All,'' then ''Edit,'' then ''Copy." Paste the selected images into the portfolio sheet by opening the portfolio sheet file and clicking ''Edit,'' then selecting ''Paste.'' Clearly separate each project. Projects can be ordered by size and importance or date of completion. Do not cram images on portfolio sheets -- allow each image to be viewed without disruption or distraction by other nearby images. Maintain a similar structure throughout each portfolio sheet.
