How to Measure a Bed to Make a Comforter
When making a custom comforter, you'll need exact measurements to fashion a final product that fits the bed. If you have an antique bed or oversize mattress that is hard to fit, the custom-made project allows you to simply measure the proportions of the bed. Proper measurements will help you determine the amount of fabric required for the comforter. By taking your own measurements you can have the comforter drape over the bed at a standard or preferred length. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove all of the bedding from the bed.
-
2
Place the measuring tape across the center of the bed. Measure from the thick stitching at the top edge of both sides of the mattress top to determine the width of the bed. Record the measurement on a piece of paper.
-
-
3
Determine the length by measuring the mattress top in a straight line from the head of the bed to the foot.
-
4
Measure the depth of the mattress set from the top edge to the bottom of the box spring. This is the comforter and coverlet drop measurement. The comforter will drape over the bed and drop to the bottom of the box spring.
-
5
Add the length measurement of the mattress top to the comforter drop length to determine the size of the comforter. Record this measurement for the length. Add the width of the mattress top with the comforter drop measurement. Record this number as the width of the comforter you plan to make. Don't forget to add the hem measurement when estimating the cloth yardage for the project. For instance, if the queen comforter measurement is the standard 60-by-80 inches, allow for at least a 61-by-81-inch fabric measurement.

Tips & Warnings
If you are measuring the bed by yourself, pin the end of the measuring tape to the mattress to keep it in place for an accurate measurement.
