Simple Wheat Paste Instructions
Quick! You need to make a model of the planet Mars, but you don't have time to run to the craft store for a papier-mache kit. You probably have all of the ingredients in your house that you need to make a simple, inexpensive and nontoxic wheat paste, which is used in the creation of papier-mache. Wheat paste can also be used as an adhesive to hang posters and flyers. You can alter the viscosity of wheat paste for a thicker or thinner result by altering the proportions of water to flour in your recipe.

Combine three tbsp. of flour and and three tbsp. of cold water in a small bowl. Mix together thoroughly with a whisk. The resulting mixture should be able to be poured easily.

Pour one cup of water into a pot and set it on your stove on high heat. Heat until the water is almost boiling.

Slowly pour the cold water and flour mix into the hot water, stirring constantly to combine the two thoroughly. Bring the water to a boil and cease stirring.

Continue to boil the water until the paste thickens, then add one tbsp. of sugar and mix thoroughly. The sugar will add additional adhesive strength. For extra stickiness you can add a few tablespoons of a white glue, such as Elmers, at this point.

Allow the wheat paste to cool after it has achieved the desired thickness. Store wheat paste in an air-tight container in your refrigerator when not using it. Wheat paste can be stored for one to two days before it begins to develop an odor.
