Pine Cone Wreath Instructions

Pine Cone Wreath Instructions thumbnail
Pine cones add a seasonal flair to wreaths.

Pine cone wreaths are a festive seasonal decoration for fall and winter and a fun do-it-yourself project. Pine cone wreaths can be simple, created from just pine cones and perhaps a few holly berry embellishments or ornate, decorated with evergreen boughs, ribbon and glitter. Deck them out in brightly colored leaves for fall, spiders and cobwebs for Halloween or holly sprigs and silver spray paint for Christmas. Your pine cone wreath is easily adaptable throughout the seasons.

Things You'll Need

  • Grapevine wreath form (can also use foam or wire form)
  • Pine cones
  • Hot glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Optional: spray paint
  • Optional embellishments: ribbon, floral berries, eucalyptus, glitter, etc.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your pine cones before attaching to the wreath form. If you are using "collected" pine cones (obtained directly from nature, not purchased), you may want to soak them overnight to remove bugs and debris. (The pine cones will close, but will reopen again as they dry.) If you are spray painting them, this should be done now as well, while you can easily access every nook and cranny of the cones.

Let paint and pine cones dry thoroughly.

Attach pine cones to wreath form, using hot glue gun. Carefully attach them, one at a time, making sure to use sufficient glue. When applying glue, look for the "tightest" portion of the cones. This is typically at the bottom of the pine cone, where the cone's scales are likely to be the closest together and the surface is flattest. This will help the glue adhere in an even layer, ensuring a firm bond between the wreath form and the pine cones.

If using a foam wreath form, attach floral picks to the bottom of the cone and insert the picks as deeply as possible into the foam.

Use filler items and embellishments to fill spaces between pine cones. The goal is to have as few gaps as possible visible between the pine cones. For a winter themed wreath, jingle bells and pine branches work well for this purpose. For fall wreaths, acorns and autumn leaves fill gaps nicely, while plastic spiders can be inserted in spaces on a Halloween wreath. You can also wrap appropriately themed ribbon around the wreath and tie it in a bow.

Use a heavy-duty wreath hanger to hang the wreath from your door or wall. The pine cone wreath will be heavy!
