How to Use PUL Fabric

How to Use PUL Fabric thumbnail
PUL is often the first choice for do-it-yourself cloth diapers.

Polyurethane laminate, or PUL fabric is a waterproof material that is soft and flexible. First created for use in the medical industry, this material is able to withstand repeated wear and washing, making it ideal for reusable personal products or products that will be exposed to a lot of moisture. Some of the most common uses for PUL fabric are as a waterproof layer for cloth diapers, as a waterproof bag or pail liner for the used diapers or for wet clothes or swimsuits and as a liner for reusable menstrual pads.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase or find a pattern for the product you want to make. A wetbag -- waterproof bag used to hold soiled diapers -- consists of a simple rectangle pattern. The finished product should fit easily inside a trash can or diaper pail. Cloth diaper patterns can also be purchased or downloaded from free sites on the Internet, as can reusable menstrual pads, also known as "momma cloth." You can also draw your own pattern on sheets of newspaper, tracing around a disposable diaper or a trash bag for guides.

    • 2

Cut out the pattern and begin sewing the project. PUL fabric can be difficult to sew because of the lamination thickness (thickness ranges depending on the material choice). Use a teflon sewing foot to prevent the PUL from sticking to the machine or the other fabrics. If sticking is an issue, put a piece of tissue paper over the PUL and tear it away once the project is completely sewn.

    • 3

Dry the PUL fabric project. Sewing puts holes in the PUL from the needles and pins. These holes could eventually lead to a problem known as wicking, in which moisture seeps through the fabric. Prevent this from happening by putting your finished PUL projects in a dryer on high heat for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This will help the PUL reseal and present a waterproof barrier to any moisture.
