Similac Formula Preparation

Similac Formula Preparation thumbnail
Similac offers a range of formulas depending on the baby's needs.

Similac has been making baby formula for more than 100 years. Over that time, it has collaborated with other laboratories to offer a wide range of formulas including hypoallergenic, soy, organic and sensitive tummies. Its formulas have taken part in more than 280 clinical studies so that they get as close as possible to having the benefits of breastmilk, including DHA and ARA to support brain and eye development. Similac's formulas come in three different types: powder, concentrated liquid and ready to feed. Here are instructions for preparing these types of formulas.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the formula is not expired and that the cans are not dented. All formulas will have an expiration date.

    • 2

Wash hands thoroughly before preparing the formula. If the formula is in a can, wipe any debris off the lid before opening and use a clean can opener.

    • 3

Boil a pot of water in preparation for mixing powdered or concentrated formulas, then let the water sit on the stove until it reaches room temperature.

    • 4

Measure one scoop of unpacked powdered formula and dump into bottle. Shake the concentrated liquid variety first before pouring an ounce into a bottle. Ready-to-feed formulas may be poured directly into a bottle and do not need to be heated.

    • 5

Pour two ounces of the room temperature preboiled water into the bottle for powdered formulas or one ounce of preboiled water for the concentrated liquid varieties.

    • 6

Attach the ring and nipple to the bottle and shake vigorously to mix.

    • 7

Wait two minutes to allow the formula to settle to prevent it from clogging the nipple.

    • 8

Feed the baby within the hour. Any premixed or opened ready-to-feed formula that is not used within an hour must be discarded due to bacteria from saliva contact.

Tips & Warnings

  • Similac recommends feeding a baby as much formula as he or she wants. However, it does have a chart with reference points for how much babies typically eat at various ages in order to prevent overfeeding (see resources).

  • Take care with hygiene when feeding a baby formula.
