How to Seal the Bulkhead on a Kayak

Seal any leaks in the bulkheads before paddling out.

The bulkheads on a kayak create waterproof and airtight seals in the bow and stern compartments. In the event of a capsize, the bulkheads prevent the entire kayak from flooding. This feature keeps anything stored in the compartments dry and keeps the kayak floating, which allows the kayaker to reenter the craft with limited difficulty. A leaking bulkhead presents not only the inconvenience of wet gear, but also safety issues. Even one flooded compartment makes a rescue significantly harder and more dangerous. Repair the seal on any leaking bulkheads before using the kayak.

Things You'll Need

• Water
• Soap
• Marine sealant
• Rubber gloves

Instructions

1. Open the kayak hatch, and fill the leaky compartment with water.

2. Identify any leaks in the bulkhead, by watching for water seeping out.

3. Drain the kayak.

4. Clean the area surrounding the leak with soap and water. Let it dry.

5. Apply a bead of marine sealant to both sides of the leak on the bulkhead.

6. Smooth out the sealant with a gloved finger. Let it dry according to the sealant's instructions -- usually 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings

• Silicone doesn't stick well to plastic or composite kayaks. Look for a marine sealant such as Lexel, 3M 5200 or Sikaflex.
