How to Direct Message a Follower on Twitter

A social networking utility that's succinct by design -- communications are limited to 140 characters -- Twitter nonetheless permits you to share ideas, information and even links to other websites with personal and professional contacts. If you want to send a message to a specific Twitter follower, rather than a "tweet" to your entire network of followers, do so using a Twitter message.

      Sign in to your Twitter account with your Twitter username and password. You must be logged in to Twitter not only to tweet, but also to send messages to individual followers.

      Create a new direct message. Navigate to the profile of the user you wish to message and click the "Messages" button located on the Twitter navigation bar. Click the "New Message" button, and then enter the real name or username of the follower you wish to message.

      Enter your direct message text, keeping in mind that it must be 140 characters or less in length. Click the "Send" button to send your message. If you have more to say, send a second message.

Tips & Warnings

  • You cannot send a message to a user who is not following you.
