DIY: Removing Cat Dander
Some people think that they are allergic to the fur of cats. However, if you suffer from a cat allergy, what actually irritates your system is the dander. Dander is a substance made up of dead skin cells that cats continue to shed regularly, just like people. If you recently moved into a new home that used to have a cat, you will need to remove the dander. You can also use these methods if you would like to continue owning a cat despite your cat dander allergy. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Vacuum with HEPA filter
- Laundry detergent
- HEPA filter air cleaner
- Cat brush
- Pet wipes

Keep your bedroom cat-free if you want to continue keeping a cat. Once you remove the dander from the room, be sure to keep your cat out of it.

Vacuum all carpeting and upholstery in your home. Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter for best results. Be sure to get into corners and crevices, as well, to remove all dander.

Clean any linens or fabrics that were exposed to a cat. Wash them in hot water in your washing machine with regular laundry detergent.

Use a HEPA filter air cleaner in your home. There are individual room models with filters that can help remove cat dander in a given space, or you can install a whole house system if you plan to keep your cat.

Brush your cat outside to help get rid of some of the dander if you want to keep your cat. Brushing on a regular basis can help control dander.

Remove additional dander from your cat by wiping down its fur with pet wipes. Wiping and brushing your cat should be a gentle, stress-free process for you and your cat.
