Scan Disk is a utility on Windows systems that checks for bad parts of your hard drive. The Scan Disk utility rectifies issues caused by system crashes, improper maintenance of applications and viruses. At the end of the Scan Disk process, your system will produce a report with the amount of hard drive space that was scanned and the errors that were found.

Shut down all of the applications and programs running on your computer. Click the "Computer" icon on your desktop.

Right-click the drive you want to perform the scan on and choose "Properties."

Select the "Tools" tab and then click the "Check Now" button in the "Error-checking" section.

Put a check mark in boxes next to "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and "Automatically fix file system errors."
