How to Calculate a Ratio From Two Numbers

A ratio is a quantitative relationship between two numbers. It expresses how much larger one number is than another. They are commonly used to show the relationship of one liquid to another, as in two parts gin to one part dry vermouth; or to illustrate the relationship of one group to another, as in there are four whites to every three minorities in the United States. Calculating a ratio requires nothing more than a knowledge of basic math.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the two numbers to be used in the ratio. For example, two and three.

    • 2

Divide the first number by the second number, as in 2/3. Reduce the fraction to its simplest form when possible. For example, two divided by six (2/6) reduces to 1/3 because two goes itself one time and into six three times. The ratio (relationship), however, remains intact.

    • 3

Express the ratio in the form "two to three" or 2:3.
