Many of the commands and functions on toolbars are also available in drop-down menus at the top of the browser. For some people, accessing those menus adds a few extra and inconvenient steps to the process. If a user needs to access the default Home page or email client from the browser, the toolbar button is just a simple click of the mouse. However, one drawback of toolbars is that they take up viewable space on the screen. You can solve this dilemma, of maintaining tool bar access while reclaiming monitor real estate, by using a simple keyboard function available in popular Internet browsers.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer browser, using your normal method. This is usually accomplished by clicking on an icon on the Windows desktop or "All Programs" list on the "Start" menu.

    • 2

Press the "F11" key at the top of the keyboard to put the Internet browser in "Full Screen" mode. This will automatically hide the toolbars in the browser, which contain the navigation buttons such as "Home" and "Back." Other third-party tool bars, such as Yahoo! Mail, will disappear as well.

    • 3

Press the "F11" key, again, to return to normal mode, and bring all toolbars back into view. Alternatively, gently slide the cursor toward the top of the screen while still in Full Screen mode, and some basic tool bar functions will temporarily drop down as small or "abbreviated" icons.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apple's Safari browser does not respond to the "F11" keyboard command. Alternatively, you might find a browser add-on that will add this capability to the browser, such as "Glims."

  • To "remove" or "edit" toolbars individually, access the browser's customization functions (see Resources).
