Load the image with which you want to work onto your computer, either by transferring it from a digital source or by scanning in a print copy.

Click on the desktop shortcut to start the Photoshop CS5 application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, browse to the image you loaded and open it.

Go to the "Layers" palette on the right and click on the "Create New Layer" button.

Select the "Custom Shape" tool from the toolbar. Go to the options that appear at the top and click on the drop-down menu for the presets. Within the dialog that appears, click on the second drop-down menu and choose "Frames." In the dialog that appears, choose "Append."

Click on one of the new set of frame shapes that appear in the presets window that you would like to use to create an edge or frame around your image.

Drag with the mouse to create the shape on the canvas. You may have to undo and redo this several times to get it just where you want it.

Go to the "Paths" palette on the right and right-click on the listed path. From the options, choose "Fill."

Go to the "Content" section in the dialog that appears and click in the "Use" drop-down. Choose whether you want to fill with the background color, the foreground color, another color you select or a pattern (patterns often produce the most impressive results). Set the "Feather" to the amount you want, if you would like the edge to fade, and click "OK."

Go to the "Path" palette and right-click on the listed path and click "Delete Path." Save your work.
