How to Ride a Zebra

How to Ride a Zebra thumbnail
Riding a fairground zebra might be more succesful than a real one.

Surprisingly, it is possible to buy a zebra and train it to be ridden. In 2009, a racehorse trainer in the United Kingdom did just that. However, for the average person it is a real challenge to be able to ride a zebra. Zebras are not domesticated and view other species as predators. Therefore, they are easily startled, and unpredictable. However, if you do find a zebra that has been successfully trained, riding it is not too different from riding a horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Work closely with the zebra's trainer to ride the zebra properly. Make sure that the trainer has put reigns on the zebra so you can hold onto it when you are on top.

    • 2

Approach the zebra slowly, with caution. Sudden movements might scare it so that it rears and run away.

    • 3

Stand on the righthand side of the zebra. Put your right foot in the stirrup, and hold onto the saddle with your hands. Then, push up on your right foot while lifting your left leg over the back of the animal.

    • 4

Put your left foot in the left stirrup, and hold onto the zebra's reigns. Get the trainer to instruct you if you are in an uncomfortable or awkward position. If the stirrups are too low or too high, they can be adjusted for you.

    • 5

Talk to the zebra softly to reassure it. Stroke the back of its neck, and say encouraging things like "good boy." This may help relax both you and the zebra.

    • 6

Get the zebra to walk. A trained zebra follows the same riding rules as a horse. Gently push your heels into the side of the zebra and make a clicking sound with your mouth. Say "Come on, zebra, here we go."

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 until the zebra starts to move. If you are having difficultly encouraging it to move, then get the trainer to manually pull the zebra forward by tugging its reigns.

    • 8

Hold onto the reigns with your hands, keep your back straight and move your body loosely as the zebra walks. Allow your body to bounce slightly as it walks. Follow the natural rhythm your body wants to take.
