How to Squirrel-Proof a Pole

Squirrels are cute, but they can be pests around bird feeders. They steal seed, chew on plastic, and can carry off entire chunks of suet. It's easier to defend a pole-mounted feeder from squirrels than a hanging feeder, but you still need to make sure the squirrels can't climb the pole or jump to the feeder. Keep squirrels from climbing the pole by installing a baffle that they can't climb around. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Slide a slinky spring toy over the top of the pole, and attach the top of the slinky with staples or nails to the feeder. Let the rest of the toy fall to the ground. When squirrels try to grab onto the spring, their weight will cause them to slide to the ground.

Install a lampshade or cylinder baffle. These types of baffles clip or slide over the pole. They create a skirt around the pole that the squirrels can't get around. You can purchase lampshade and cylinder baffles at stores that sell wild bird products, or order them online.

    • 3

Remove any alternate routes that the squirrels have to access the pole. Cut overhanging tree branches, and move garden furniture or other features so the squirrels can't jump over the baffle. Make sure there are no objects that the squirrels can jump from within 10 feet of the pole.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure the diameter of the pole before you purchase a lampshade or cylinder baffle. They are made to fit specific sizes of poles, so you need to get one that will fit your pole.
