How to Edit and Write Captions for Pictures
Captions that appear under photos have multiple uses. Newspapers rely on them to inform readers and pull them into the story. Advertisers add captions to product photos to help sell their products. You may even see humor sites on the Web that add funny captions to photos. Motivational posters also use captions to encourage and empower readers. Using the Windows 7 version of Microsoft Paint, you can add captions to your pictures quickly.

Click the Windows 7 Start button and type "Paint." The Paint icon appears. Click that icon to launch the program. When it opens, a ribbon containing controls appears at the top, and an empty canvas occupies the middle of the Paint window.

Press "Ctrl" and "O" to open the pop-up window containing a list of all your computer files. Locate any picture file and double-click it. Paint will load the picture and display it on the canvas. Note that small handles appear around the picture's edge.

Click the bottom right handle; hold down the left mouse button; and drag your mouse down to create a small blank area under the photo. Drag the mouse until the area is just large enough to hold a caption.

Click the "Text" tool. This tool is near the top of the ribbon and looks like the letter "A."

Click anywhere on the picture and type your caption.

Move the cursor over one of the picture's handles. The cursor changes to a cross.

Click that cross and hold down your left mouse button. Drag the cross. The caption moves as you drag it. Position the caption so it is centered horizontally under the picture.

Click any part of the caption and press "Ctrl" and "A". This selects all the text.

Click the "Color 1" box at the top of the window to select it. The square sets the picture's foreground color. Small colored squares appear next to that box.

Move your mouse cursor over the squares and note how the color of the caption changes to match the color square that is under your cursor. Click one of the colored squares to set the text to that color.

Adjust the values for font type, size and style in the font properties section.

Click the drop-down arrow in the upper left corner of the window when the caption has the look you desire.

Click the "Save As" button and type a name for your picture in the "File Name" text box. Click "Save."

Tips & Warnings
Press "Ctrl" and "Z" when you make a mistake while editing. Microsoft Paint will undo your most recent action.
