How to Take My Clipless Pedals Off
Bicycle "clipless" pedals are oddly named --- this style of pedal uses clips to attach to the cycling shoes. Regardless of the curious moniker, these pedals provide an efficient power transfer between the cranks and the drivetrain. The pedals attach to the bicycle cranks through the threads on the stem of the pedals, going into the thread bore on the crank arms. Removing them requires a special tool called a pedal wrench. In some cases, an 8 mm hex wrench may be needed along with the pedal wrench.

1
Set the bicycle up against a wall or solid object. If you have a bicycle work stand, secure the bike onto the stand. A stand is useful but not necessary for the task.
-
2
Push the cranks so they are parallel with the chain. Insert the crescent end of the pedal wrench onto the gap between the pedal and the crank.

3
Hold the opposite side pedal so it will not move and push down hard on the pedal wrench to crack the thread bond between the pedal and the crank bore. This takes a bit of strength and elbow grease. Take care not to let your grip slip on the wrench because this often leads to ripped knuckles. Once the pedal threads are cracked and loose, unscrew the pedal and pull out from the crank.

Insert the pedal wrench into the gap on the opposite side pedal. Hold the crank arm where you just removed the first pedal to keep it from moving. Push down on the pedal wrench to loosen and crack the threads. Once loose, unscrew and remove the pedal.

Tips & Warnings
The process to remove the pedals is easy. The strength and effort it takes to crack the threads may be difficult.
