How to Hang a Heavy Picture on a Sheet Rock Wall
When hanging a heavy wooden picture frame on sheet rock, you'll need to use a hanging bracket that's designed to hold the frame securely in place. If the picture frame falls, it could cause damage to furniture, flooring or even serious bodily injury. A French cleat bracket is a specific type of hanging bracket designed to hold heavy picture frames. These brackets come in pairs; one is directly attached to the frame while the other is screwed to the sheet rock. French cleat systems include all necessary screw fasteners, which can be directly threaded into the sheet rock and the frames. Does this Spark an idea?

- French cleat brackets
- Pencil

1
Estimate how much the picture weighs. Weigh the picture on a household scale or compare it to an object with a known weight.
-
2
Purchase a French cleat bracket system that corresponds with the picture's total weight. Look for a bracket set with a leveling bubble attached to the wall bracket for ease of installation.
-
-
3
Inspect the two brackets and determine which one you should attach to the back of the picture frame. Align the top edge of the bracket with the top of the picture frame.
-
4
Slip a screw fastener--which is included in the French cleat system--through each of the bracket's pre-drilled slots. Thread the screw fasteners into the picture's wood frame, using a hand held screwdriver or an electric screw gun. Avoid over-tightening the screw fasteners to prevent the thread from stripping.
-
5
Hold the frame up to the sheet rock wall and determine where to hang it. Scribe along the top edge of the French cleat bracket, which is attached to the frame, leaving a light mark on the wall as a placement indicator.
-
6
Hold the bracket up to the wall and align it with the pencil mark. Push the tip of the anchorless screw directly into the sheet rock material, so its threads will dig into the wall when it's rotated clockwise. Attach a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver to the screw fastener and secure the bracket to the wall. Raise or lower the opposite end of the bracket while looking at the leveling bubble at the center of the bracket.
-
7
Thread another anchorless screw into the wall at the opposite end of the bracket--using the Phillips or flat-head screwdriver--once the leveling bubble is between the two lines. Make sure the bubble is still between the lines, which indicates that the frame is level, and fill any other pre-drilled slots with anchorless screws.
-
8
Lift the picture frame up to the wall and slide the bracket that's attached to the picture frame over the wall bracket.
