How to Amend a Lease Agreement for Free

A lease agreement amendment must be signed by the same people who signed the original lease.

A lease agreement is a document that sets the terms, restrictions and responsibilities for the tenant and landlord. An amendment to a lease is necessary when the terms set forth by the original lease are either no longer valid or require altering. For example, if the lease originally stated there were no pets allowed in the building but the landlord has agreed to allow a small pet for an additional fee, the lease will need to be altered to reflect this change to protect the tenant. The amendments must be stated clearly and agreed upon by both the tenant and landlord on the original lease.

Instructions

1. Discuss the terms to be altered and come to an agreement.

2. Draft a document based on the agreed-upon amendments. Include the date of the original lease, the current date, the tenant's name, the landlord's name, and the address of the tenant.

3. List the amendments to the original lease in detail.

4. Sign and date the lease amendment. Both the tenant and landlord must sign and date the lease.

5. Make a copy of the amended lease so both parties will have it for reference.
