1
Separate the front and back ladders on the step ladder by pulling them apart along the base edge. This action expands the metal joints, allowing the ladder to remain together at the top for support while they are pulled apart at the base. Snap the joints in place by pressing down on the middle, locking and creating a reliable hold.
-
2
Place all found legs of the wooden step ladder on a flat surface. Because the ladder supports itself, it is important to have an even foundation, assuring you a stable position.

-
3
Stand on any step but the very top step. This step is located at the thinnest point of the ladder, which can create an unstable ladder and cause wobbling from stepping.
-
4
Wear sneakers that are non-slip when climbing the step ladder. A sudden change in your footing can cause a slip or lost balance. This can be a dangerous situation if you are holding a heavy or large object.
-
5
Avoid overreaching. If you place the step ladder on a secure surface and go up the ladder, but cannot reach something off to the side, step off the ladder and move it closer to the object. If you attempt to overreach, you can tip the ladder, tending to result in serious injury.
