How to Write a Paper on Urban Legend Stories

Urban legends are stories, usually false or greatly exaggerated, that are repeatedly told and embellished over time until they are believed to be true. Some urban legends have some basis in fact and then the details get altered and repeated over time to make the story scarier or more entertaining. If you are writing a paper on urban legends, you'll need to do some research to separate fact from fiction so you can explain the origins and genesis for each story you are writing about.

      Read about as many urban legends as you can through books and the Internet and pick the top three or four that interest you to research more fully.

      Research each of the legends you selected to determine their origins and how they evolved over time. New articles and online fact-checking sites such as Snopes are useful for this purpose. Avoid user-submitted sites such as Wikipedia since the information may not be accurate. Wiki-sites may cite sources that will be useful to you, however.

      Create an outline of urban legends for your paper, which is a skeleton structure that will assist you order and construct the information in your paper. Organize your notes in the order of your outline to make your paper easier to write.

      Write an introductory paragraph that explains what an urban legend is and how they evolve. Include examples from the urban legends that you will be including in your paper.

      Type at least one paragraph for each urban legend that you wish to cover and whether the story is true, false or a combination of the two.

      Close the paper with a finishing paragraph that draws final conclusions based on the information already addressed.

      Include a list of all your sources that verify your information is accurate.
