How to Use a Thread Tap
Using a thread tap allows you to repair a part that has a threaded hole with stripped threads. The alternative is to completely dismantle the part and take it to a specialized shop for repair. This latter option will cause you to spend much more downtime and money compared to do-it-yourself repairs. Most thread taps can be bought as a kit that include all the proper installation tools and detailed instructions for use.

1
Clean the area around the hole with the damaged threads.
-
2
Drill a hole with the appropriate sized bit for the tap be used. Since the hole that is to be tapped already has threads that are now stripped, it must be drilled out to slightly over sized in order to be re-threaded. Make sure the hole is deep enough to accommodate the tap required.

3
Set the tap over the hole that is to be threaded. You must make sure the tap is seated squarely over the hole in order to cut the threads correctly.
-
4
Start turning the tap into the drilled hole. Turn the tap two to three turns then remove it to make sure that the threads are being cut correctly into the hole.
-
5
Apply a few drops of cutting fluid to the tap. Advance the tap into the hole by a turn or so, then back a half turn in order to break up the metallic chips. Continue until the entire hole is threaded.
