How to Create an Avatar for WordPress

When you leave a comment on a WordPress blog, the blog displays a picture of a person's outline next to the comment. If you find yourself commenting on blogs frequently, you might prefer to select a picture to serve as your avatar and represent you online. Blogs running WordPress 2.5 and later have built-in support for "Gravatars" -- globally recognized avatars -- that follow a user on every website. After you configure a Gravatar for yourself you will see it on every WordPress blog that you leave a comment on.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to Gravatar.com and click the "Sign Up" link at the top of the page.

    • 2

Enter your email address and then click the "Signup" button.

    • 3

Check the email address that you entered for a message titled "Welcome to Gravatar." Open the message and click the link contained within.

    • 4

Enter the user name that you would like to use when adding or changing avatars on the Gravatar website.

    • 5

Enter a password and then click "Signup."

    • 6

Click the "Add one by clicking here" link.

    • 7

      Click "My computer's hard drive."

    • 8

Click the "Choose File" button. Find the image on your computer that you would like to use as your WordPress avatar and double-click it.

    • 9

Click "Next." The Gravatar website displays a preview of what your WordPress avatar will look like. Click and drag with the mouse to crop the image.

    • 10

      Click "Crop and Finish."

    • 11

Select a rating such as "G" or "PG" for your avatar. This rating should be accurate and selected according to the guidelines on the bottom of the page. Some WordPress websites do not display avatars above a certain rating level.

    • 12

Submit a comment on a WordPress website to see your new avatar.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order for WordPress blogs to recognize and display your Gravatar, you must submit comments using the same email address that you used when creating the Gravatar. You can add additional email addresses after creating a Gravatar account.

  • You can also use the Gravatar service for a WordPress blog that you own.
