Cuddling with your baby makes him feel safe.

There are many reasons babies sometimes have a difficult time settling down enough to fall asleep at night. Some causes may be hunger, discomfort or pain. In many babies, teething is accompanied by fever, irritability and severe pain that may require the use of medication. Speak with your doctor before giving your baby any kind of medication. Babies who are in pain need immediate attention from their parent or caregiver to feel safe and relaxed enough to fall asleep. Most babies enjoy singing, rocking and cuddling.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the baby up. Check to see if the baby's diaper is wet or soiled and change the diaper if necessary.

    • 2

Take the baby's temperature and give pain medication, if needed. Make sure the baby is dressed warmly, but not isn't too hot.

    • 3

Dim the lights in the room. Rock the baby either in a rocking chair or in your arms. Singing also helps babies relax.

    • 4

Nurse or bottle-feed your baby. Cuddle with her until she is settled down enough to fall asleep. Put baby back in her crib.
