How to Light the Pilot on a Stove

How to Light the Pilot on a Stove thumbnail
Some gas stoves have a pilot light, which you must manually light.

If you have a natural gas fueled stove with a pilot light instead of electric igniters, you need to keep the pilot light lit in order to light the burners when you are cooking. While the pilot light generally stays lit after installation, it is not unusual for the flame to go out occasionally. If the burners are not lighting, or you smell natural gas, the flame on the pilot may have been blown out by a draft or some other malfunction. You will need to locate and relight the pilot in order to use the stove's burners. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn all of the burner control knobs to the off position to make sure no gas is leaking through the burners.

    • 2

Remove the burner grates from the stove top and set them aside.

    • 3

Lift the stove top away from the entire unit. If it is on hinges, open it and allow it to rest on the hinged edge. If it is not on hinges, set it aside.

    • 4

Locate the pilot lights. On a stove top, there may be several, as opposed to the oven, which usually has a single pilot. The pilot should be labeled, but if it isn't, look for open-ended metal tubes. They should be located between burners along the metal gas tubing that runs fuel to each burner. The pilots are off-shoots of the continuous tubing.

    • 5

Light a match and hold it at the open end of each pilot light. Each should light up with a small flame.

    • 6

Replace the stove top and burner grates.
