How to Make a Bookmark Tassle

Make a tassel for your bookmark to make finding your spot easier.

The bookmarks sold in book stores are made off all sorts of different materials, like wood, metal or leather. The traditional paper bookmark, however, is the least expensive and the simplest to make yourself. While a simple strip of paper will keep your spot in your latest read, adding a tassel made of embroidery thread to that homemade bookmark will make finding your spot even quicker.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the embroidery floss around a 2 inch square of cardboard 20 times.

    • 2

Measure and cut an 8-inch piece of embroidery floss. Thread one end of the floss under the floss wrapped around the cardboard square. Bring the ends of the floss together and knot them.

    • 3

Turn the loop of floss around until the knotted ends are under the wrapped floss. Then slide the loop to one of the edges of the cardboard square. Knot the loop tightly against the wrapped floss. This will keep the tassel at the end of the string of floss that attaches it to the bookmark.

    • 4

Snip the wrapped embroidery floss along the edge of the square opposite the edge where the loop of floss is tied.

    • 5

Tie a 2-inch-length of embroidery floss around the bunch of floss half an inch from the end where the long piece of floss is attached. Trim the tails of this piece of floss to complete the bookmark tassel.
