How to Determine the Year of OMC Outboard Motors

An outboard motor is a piece of equipment commonly found on a personal water vehicle, such as a boat. Knowing the age of your outboard motor can come in handy if the unit starts giving you problems. An older outboard motor, for example, by its very nature is likely to have more problems than a younger one. You can determine the year your OMC outboard motor was manufactured using its serial number. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of OMC outboard motor you own. OMC has made a variety of different series of motors, including the SternDrive, the Cobra, the SailDrive and the SeaDrive. This information will be listed on the motor itself, near the OMC company logo.

    • 2

Write down the model number that is printed on your OMC outboard motor. This will be a series of numbers and digits printed on an identification plate on the motor itself.

    • 3

Compare the last several digits of your model number with a "Model Number Identification Chart" for your type of OMC outboard motor. For example, if you own an OMC SternDrive, look at the OMC SternDrive "Model Number Identification Chart" on a website such as Auto Repair Manuals (see Resources). If the last digits of your model number are CIS, your OMC outboard motor was produced in 1981. If the last digits are CTR, your OMC outboard motor was produced in 1983.
