How to Fill in an Autoshape With Color in PowerPoint

Creating a PowerPoint presentation through Microsoft's electronic slideshow software usually begins with typing bullet points in the program's black text on white slide default settings. But PowerPoint also comes standard with artistic options such as colors and autoshapes, which may be a welcome alternative to that generic black and white look for the presentation's audience. Fill autoshapes with colors matching the presentation's theme, company branding or just something to capture attention on the slide and screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Open PowerPoint, which defaults to a blank white slide with two text boxes called "Click to add title" and "Click to add subtitle."

    • 2

Click the "Insert" tab at the top of the workspace. Click the "Shapes" button on the ribbon/toolbar below the tab.

    • 3

Click one of the autoshapes on the drop-down menu below the button, such as one of the rectangle options. The cursor changes into a plus sign.

    • 4

Position the cursor on the slide, click and hold down the left mouse button and drag to form the autoshape. Release the left mouse button when the shape is the appropriate size. Depending on the previous settings used in PowerPoint, the shape may already fill with a color.

    • 5

Click the new orange "Drawing Tools" tab at the top of the workspace. Click the drop-down arrow next to the "Shape Fill" button in the "Shape Styles" section of the ribbon/toolbar.

    • 6

Hover -- without clicking -- the mouse over the small colored boxes in the drop-down menu and watch as the autoshape fills with color. Click an actual colored square to make the change of color and fill the autoshape.
