How to Use a 50mm F1/8 Lens

How to Use a 50mm F1/8 Lens thumbnail
50mm prime lenses are handy for close-ups.

A 50mm f/1.8 lens is a useful second lens for a beginning photographer. It has a much sharper image than most kit lenses and is capable of shallow depth of field by opening to f/1.8. This lens is called a "prime" lens, which describes a lens that cannot zoom in or out. While this may seem like a disadvantage, the lens produces much higher-quality visuals because of it. This 50mm can be used almost like any other lens but is especially good at portraits and close-ups.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the lens to your camera and remove the lens cap.

    • 2

Open the aperture up to f/1.8. The actual process depends on your model of camera.

    • 3

Look through the viewfinder and rotate the focus ring in manual mode to see how shallow the depth of field is. Close your aperture to f/2.8 or higher if it is too shallow.

    • 4

Place your camera close to the subject or place your subject in front of a plain background for a portrait.

    • 5

Focus on the element you want, either manually or automatically, and take the photo.
