A sewing machine will stitch up a ruffled curtain.

A ruffle curtain can enhance a romantic style of décor and is a favorite window treatment for the country kitchen. Stitching up the ruffle curtain on the sewing machine is not difficult and requires just a straight stitch for hems and the rod pocket. The hand-gathered ruffle is sewn on the curtain. A ruffled valence, stitched up and installed on a separate rod above the curtain to hide the ruffled curtain rod, adds additional charm. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window width and height, adding 8 inches to the height, from the curtain rod to the desired length. Use this measurement, doubled, to determine the fabric yardage for two ruffled curtain panels, plus additional fabric for the ruffles.

    • 2

Cut the fabric panels with scissors to the measurement. Fold one long outside edge panel to the wrong side of the fabric 1/2 inch twice, pin and sew down with a straight stitch for a side panel hem.

    • 3

Fold the fabric at the top of the panel over 4 inches twice to the wrong side, and pin in place. Create a rod pocket by sewing two lines of straight stitching 2 inches from the top edge and 1/4 inch from the bottom edge.

    • 4

Cut an 8-inch-wide strip of fabric to the length of one long side plus one short side of the panel, doubled. Fold the fabric in half, wrong sides together, and pin in place. Thread a needle, and take 1-inch basting stitches 1/4 inch from the raw edges of the fabric. Gather the ruffle to half its length, and stitch in place to secure.

    • 5

Pin the ruffle to the wrong side of the inside edge of the curtain panel at the raw edges of the fabrics with right sides facing. Stitch in place on the sewing machine 1/4 inch from the edge.

    • 6

Repeat all steps for a second ruffled curtain panel.
